Hugh Whaley is the director of corporate relations and communications for the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) and the National Wheat Foundation (NWF). In this role, he manages relationships between the two wheat organizations and agribusinesses that provide inputs, transportation, marketing and other products and services for U.S. wheat farmers.
Prior to coming to NAWG, Whaley worked as general manager for the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance, a group of farmer- and rancher-led organizations and industry partners with the vision of enhancing public confidence and trust in, and understanding of, today’s agriculture.
Whaley previously was the director for industry and association relations at Broadhead + Co and president for association business at Osborn & Barr, both marketing communications companies. In those roles, he directed communications programs for organizations such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, United Soybean Board, National Pork Board, Cattlemen’s Beef Board, Propane Education & Research Council, U.S. Grains Council, American Lamb Board, USDA Rural Development and USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service. He has also served as a senior staff director of education and corporate relations for the American Soybean Association.
He has held numerous board and committee leadership positions with a wide variety of organizations including the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB), the NAFB Foundation, the National Farm-City Council, Meeting Professionals International and the Center for Women in Transition.
Whaley received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Purdue University and is a U.S. Navy veteran. He and his family live near St. Louis, Mo.
