NAWG and U.S. Wheat Associates recently joined two dozen other groups in writing to the House appropriators to reiterate P.L. 480 food aid priorities.
In comments submitted for a hearing held May 1, the ad hoc coalition voiced strong support for sustained funding for food aid programs, specifically those under Titles I and II of P.L. 480.
Despite significant need for food assistance in many parts of the world, the groups noted that shipments of food aid declined 71 percent from 1999 to 2007.
The coalition made a number of specific recommendations, including:
- providing full funding for Title II at the $2.5 billion level authorized by law and consistent with the FY2009 appropriation;
- restoring Title I/Food for Progress program funding to responsible levels to maintain efficiencies of the program; and
- adding to Committee report language the FY2003 directive to the administration to make greater use of existing authorities to expand food aid to regions in critical need.
